Downtown Kalamazoo is on the Rise

What do Downtown Insiders Know that You Don't?

Recently, people outside of downtown Kalamazoo have talked about it like it’s a place past its prime, but step into downtown today and you’ll find a completely different story, one that is being written by the insiders who know Kalamazoo the best.

The latest wave of openings and expansions is being driven by existing downtown business owners and their employees:

  • Three new bars are joining the scene: two that are planned for 2026 and ZERO, a non-alcoholic bar that just opened, offering a creative, inclusive space.

  • One new retail store recently opened its doors, and Kalamazoo Candle has nearly doubled its size, creating more space for retail and custom candle making.

  • Two restaurants are expanding their footprint, while the owners of the Beer Exchange are adding an entirely new concept this fall called Old Skool Bar to the mix.

This isn’t a downtown in decline—it’s vibrant and fueled by passion, and all of this is happening two years before the Event Center is planned to open.

And for visitors, it’s easier than ever to explore. Public ramps now offer 90 minutes of free parking, giving you plenty of time to discover your new favorite spot.

So, what are you missing? A place that’s alive with creativity, community, and confidence. Downtown Kalamazoo isn’t waiting for its moment—it’s already happening.
